UWA Assures Tourists of Readiness Amidst AFCON 2027 Preparations

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has reaffirmed its readiness to welcome visitors across the country’s national parks as Uganda strengthens its position as an international tourism destination ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The announcement comes as the country rebuilds international travel confidence following the end of its Ebola outbreak and prepares to use AFCON 2027 to showcase its wildlife, natural attractions and cultural heritage to the world.

In a message shared on 1 November 2026 through its official social media platforms, UWA stated: “We are ready to receive all our visitors in different National parks.

The announcement reinforces Uganda’s invitation to domestic and international travelers to explore its protected areas and experience some of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations.

Uganda Restores Travel Confidence Following Ebola Outbreak

Uganda’s tourism readiness comes following the successful control of the 2026 Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

On 28 July 2026, the Ministry of Health officially declared the country Ebola-free after completing the required outbreak response measures. The World Health Organization subsequently confirmed the end of the outbreak on 27 August 2026.

The development is significant for tourism because international travelers often consider public health conditions when choosing destinations.

UWA Strengthens Community Partnerships in Conservation

Beyond wildlife protection, UWA is increasingly recognizing the importance of involving communities living around protected areas in conservation efforts.

At stakeholder engagement activities in October 2026, a senior Presidential Advisor on tourism, Lily Ajarova emphasized the need to put communities at the centre of conservation rather than relying solely on armed enforcement and physical barriers.

UWA’s 2025/2026 performance figures demonstrate this approach, with 1,282 community livelihood groups supported, 2,421 community meetings conducted and UGX 5.51 billion disbursed through its revenue-sharing programme.

Community partnerships complement traditional conservation measures, including ranger patrols and law enforcement.

UWA Readiness for AFCON 2027: An Opportunity to Showcase Uganda Tourism

Uganda’s readiness announcement also comes as the country prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

On 30 October 2026, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) signed a destination marketing partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), securing Official Destination Sponsor rights for the tournament.

The partnership provides Uganda with an international platform to promote its tourism attractions to football supporters, participating teams, officials and international visitors.

Beyond attending matches, visitors will have opportunities to extend their stays and explore Uganda’s national parks.

These include Bwindi and Mgahinga for mountain gorilla trekking, Queen Elizabeth for wildlife safaris and boat cruises, Murchison Falls for spectacular scenery and Kibale for chimpanzee tracking.
