Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has reduced mountain gorilla trekking permit fees for international non-resident visitors from US$800 to US$600 ahead of the inaugural Mountain Gorilla Festival scheduled to take place from the 19 to 22 November 2026.
The US$200 reduction is part of UWA’s low-season tourism promotion initiative, which covers April, May and November. The discounted rate applies to gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, two of Uganda’s leading destinations for mountain gorilla encounters.
The development comes at a significant time as Uganda prepares to welcome visitors, conservationists, tourism operators and local communities to Kisoro District for the Mountain Gorilla Festival, scheduled for 19–22 November 2026.
Mountain Gorilla Festival to Celebrate Conservation and Communities.

The inaugural Mountain Gorilla Festival will take place under the theme “Protecting Gorillas, Empowering Communities”, with the tagline “Run, Explore, Conserve.”
The four-day event aims to strengthen the relationship between wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism and community development.
According to UWA Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi, communities living around protected areas must directly benefit from tourism and conservation for wildlife protection efforts to succeed.
The festival will therefore provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs, women, young people, hospitality businesses, tour guides and cultural groups to showcase their products and services while benefiting from increased visitor numbers.
Gorilla Trekking Permit Fees: What Travelers Need to Know
The discounted gorilla trekking fee offers international visitors a saving of US$200 per person compared with the standard US$800 permit price.
The reduced rates are intended to encourage more visitors to travel during traditionally quieter tourism months and increase activity in Uganda’s gorilla trekking destinations.
Travelers should confirm permit availability, applicable rates and booking conditions with UWA or a licensed tour operator before making travel arrangements.
Ugandan citizens and other East African nationals also have access to more affordable gorilla trekking rates, currently listed at UGX 300,000 per person.
Virunga Gorilla Marathon to Highlight Kisoro’s Tourism Potential
One of the major highlights of the festival will be the Virunga Gorilla Marathon, scheduled for 21 November 2026.
The marathon will showcase Kisoro’s beautiful landscapes, mountain scenery and tourism attractions while using sport to promote conservation and community development.
Participants will have opportunities to run, hike and explore the region, with a signature 112-kilometre ultra-trail among the planned race options.

The event also aims to generate business for accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators, tour companies and other tourism enterprises in the region.
Tree planting, in partnership with Stanbic Bank, has been identified as part of this year’s environmental initiative.
Uganda Strengthens Its Position as a Mountain Gorilla Destination
Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making the country one of the most important destinations for mountain gorilla conservation and tourism.
Visitors can experience gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which has several trekking sectors, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in southwestern Uganda.
Beyond the gorilla encounter, these destinations offer opportunities to explore local cultures, mountain landscapes, bird life and other wildlife attractions.
